Berwyn’s first municipal parking facility, located in the Depot district, was completed late in 2009. The facility includes 378 parking spaces for commuters, businesses, residents, and visitors. With an eleven-month construction schedule, the facility was completed on time and under budget. The City was able to negotiate the reallocation of 88 commuter parking spaces from along the rail into the new facility, freeing up much needed parking in front of Depot businesses.
Sunny Days Kids Academy Sunny Days, a day care center serving families and children in the Berwyn area, utilized TIF for removal and replacement of the building's existing roof. The improvement aided the business owner to stay in a historically significant building in the Roosevelt Road commercial corridor.
The owner of the two-story building received TIF incentives to rehab the building's exterior, adding new windows and signage. The rehab project gives a new look to this important business in the Roosevelt corridor - Friendly Tap, a bar featuring live music.
Gina's Homemade Italian Ice Gina's fills an important niche in the Roosevelt Road corridor, offering a place to satisfy the cravings of folks with a serious sweet tooth. This business received a TIF incentive to help replace a ceiling, doors, windows and vinyl siding, repair gutters and fund associated architectural services.
Buona Beef's owners decided that their flagship store on Roosevelt needed renovation and expansion. The BDC aided Buona Beef in funding this project for demolition/rehabilitation, architectural and survey work. With TIF covering a portion of the total costs, the result is a beautiful building worthy of being one of the cornerstones of the Roosevelt Road renaissance.
The Italian restaurant in the heart of the Depot District utilized TIF funding to complete interior expansion by reconfiguring the dining area and bar. By late summer, one of the City's premier restaurants was offering stylish al fresco and indoor dining to Berwyn residents and visitors.
The historic Depot District has hundreds of workers and commuters daily and needs unique restaurants to feed those hungry folks. Enter Brando's, specializing in American casual fare. With the help of TIF money, the restauratuers were able to enlist the help of an architect, perform interior renovation work and add an exterior awning.
Able assists small businesses throughout Berwyn with printing services. The BDC aided the printer with obtaining TIF funding for the removal and replacement of the building's roof.
The City partnered with the elementary school district on Berwyn's south side to help fund renovation work at the LaVergne Education Center. The project included an energy efficiency upgrade to replace deteriorated windows and doors and to install technology infrastructure.
Over the summers of 2008 and 2009, the BDC assisted in coordinating reconstruction of the alleys along Ogden Avenue. Prior to the reconstruction, the alleyways were a mixture of surface materials, including gravel. Because drainage was ineffective, the City wanted to reconstruct them to protect surrounding buildings. Today, the alleys feature state-of-the-art drainage. |
