Berwyn has been nicknamed, “Beautiful
Berwyn” for it’s tree-lined streets, sturdy brick
bungalows, and Victorian “painted ladies.”
Residents of Berwyn enjoy some of the finest and most affordable
housing available in the Chicagoland area. Predominantly single-family
homes, the residential neighborhoods present a pleasant blend
of old and new, situated along quiet tree-lined streets with
meticulously maintained lawns and gardens. Here you will find
sturdy and beautiful Chicago-style brick bungalows, which have
long been associated with the city. In addition, there are handsome
multi-unit apartment complexes constructed in the early 1900’s. And
a stroll through the historic neighborhoods will also reveal stately Victorian,
English Tudor, and Prairie School architecture. A wonderful place to
live, work and raise a family, generation after generation continues to call
Berwyn its home.
Berwyn’s Bungalows, the most significant collection
of Chicago-style bungalows in the nation, were built from
the 1920’s through the 1940’s. They range
in style from the traditional one or one-and-a-half stories
with two or three bedrooms, living and dining rooms and a basement
and attic, to larger, “super” bungalows, with two
full stories, glazed brick exteriors and tile roofs. Decorative
details included oak woodwork and stained glass windows.
The city is filled with hard-working residents with their
own Berwyn bungalow-restoration love stores. A weekend
of refinishing woodwork, restoring art glass windows, and picking
out period-appropriate paint is not unusual, nor is finding
that “rehabbed” home already perfect for move-in.
Many architecturally rich homes house some fancy woodwork
and tricky details. You might find a Prairie School cottage
from the American System Built Homes – a Frank Lloyd
Wright design, or an Art Deco or Modern look home tucked away
on a tree-lined street.
