About the Charles E. Piper Award

Each year the BDC presents the Charles E. Piper Award to an individual selected for recognition for their business achievements and community involvement. Members in good standing are invited to nominate an individual that best exemplifies the spirit of Mr. Piper, one of Berwyn's first developers.

Charles Piper can be best described as resilient, visionary and dynamic. As one of the first settlers to the area, Mr. Piper’s work began in the 1890’s and allowed for the current day Berwyn. Against the odds and using his own private funds, he built the hub of Berwyn, the Berwyn Train Station; assisted with the high quality and stringent building standards which produced our City of Homes; and laid out a land plan which produced multiple business corridors and diversity for the city’s tax base.
